Homosexuality Scandal in Catholic Church Nigeria: Altar Boy Speaks on Abuse Allegations

A major scandal has hit the Catholic Church in Nigeria following allegations of sexual misconduct against a priest in the Diocese of Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State. A former altar boy, identified only as Bayo (name changed), has come forward with claims of abuse that he says took place during his teenage years.
The Allegations
In an exclusive interview, Bayo alleged that Reverend Father Kenneth (name changed) exploited his trust after offering him financial and spiritual support. He said the relationship, which began with mentorship and guidance, eventually turned into repeated sexual abuse.
According to Bayo, other young members of the mission house were also victims, some of whom later entered the priesthood themselves. He described a culture of silence and favoritism that enabled the abuse to continue unchecked.
Investigations and Church Response
The former Bishop of Ijebu-Ode, Father Albert Fasina, set up an investigative commission into the allegations. The case was later referred to the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF) in Rome. The Vatican office acknowledged the seriousness of the case and issued a formal warning to Father Kenneth, instructing him to avoid situations that could cause scandal.
However, Bayo expressed frustration, claiming that critical evidence was withheld and that church officials appeared more concerned with protecting reputations than ensuring justice. He also alleged that he faced threats after attempting to expose the abuse.
Calls for Accountability
Bayo has urged the Catholic Church to take stronger action to protect children and vulnerable members of the faith community. He insists that silence or cover-ups only endanger more lives and undermine the integrity of the church.
“The faithful deserve transparency. Priests must be held to the highest standards. Silence or inaction will only endanger more lives,” Bayo said.
The scandal has reignited public debate on accountability, child protection, and the need for structural reforms in the Catholic Church in Nigeria.
